Troubleshooting tips
- ›Mic not moving? Check OS-level mute: macOS Sound Preferences or Windows Privacy Settings → Microphone.
- ›Camera black? Another app may be using it. Close Zoom, Teams, or other meeting apps first.
- ›No speaker sound? Check OS volume and make sure the correct output device is selected in system settings.
- ›Permission denied? Click the lock icon in your browser's address bar and re-enable mic/camera access.
- ›Left/right test: use headphones for accurate stereo channel verification.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is this tool free?
- Yes, 100% free. No account, no download, no subscription required.
- Does it record or store my audio or video?
- No. Everything runs entirely in your browser using the WebRTC APIs. Nothing is recorded, uploaded, or transmitted to any server. The streams are processed locally and released when you stop testing.
- Why does my browser ask for permission?
- Browsers require explicit user permission before any website can access a microphone or camera — this is a security feature. You control it entirely and can revoke access at any time from the padlock icon in your browser's address bar.
- Why can't I see my camera or mic name before clicking 'Test'?
- Browser security rules prevent websites from reading device labels until permission is granted. After you allow access, the full device name appears in the switcher so you can select between multiple devices.
- My mic meter isn't moving when I speak — what's wrong?
- Check that: (a) you selected the correct microphone in the device switcher, (b) your OS hasn't muted the mic at system level (macOS Sound Preferences or Windows Privacy Settings → Microphone), (c) the browser tab has microphone permission (check the address bar lock icon).
- How is FPS measured?
- The tool counts how many video frames the browser delivers per second using requestAnimationFrame. This measures actual delivered FPS, which may be lower than your camera's rated speed depending on lighting, USB bandwidth, or browser throttling.
- What does the speaker tone test do?
- It plays a pure sine wave tone (you choose the frequency) through your audio output. Use the Left/Right channel buttons to confirm both stereo channels work — ideal with headphones.
- Does it work on mobile?
- Yes. On mobile, use the device switcher to toggle between front and rear cameras. Note that left/right speaker testing is less meaningful on phones with a single speaker. iOS requires Safari 14.3 or later.
